Day 9 – July 28, 2014
– Nerren Nerren to Monkey Mia - distance travelled: 248 kms - 23oC high; 12oC
low. After a reasonably early start
we arrived in Denham, Australia’s westernmost town, just after lunch. Got
tickets for watching and possibly feeding the dolphins at Monkey Mia, picked up
some basic groceries in a rather basic grocery store and had a guy at a local
tire shop examine the flat tire only to tell us that it needed to be replaced
as it was completely deformed. Don had
pulled over right away but that tire went as flat as a pancake in no time, so
the damage must have been done. The guy
quoted us $450 for a new tire which Gwen ran by the rental company by
phone. Way overpriced, they said, plus
get the same tire (the guy only had a Cooper tire, not Bridgestone). So told the guy sorry, rental company prefers
the same tire; we’ll pick one up in Carnarvon further north. As we have two spare tires, we still had a
spare so we could wait another day or so.
The tire shop guy – who was a bit grumpy as we interrupted his lunch
break – bought our explanation for not getting his tire without a problem and
only (?) charged us $20 for taking off the tire and disposing of it. Anyway, in Monkey Mia we pitched our tents at
the only place there for $80 (most expensive ever in Australia) but we have to
admit, Monkey Mia Resort is a very nice place, with plenty of room for us to
pitch our tents, a gorgeous beach right there and all sorts of amenities including
a pool and hot tub. We were nice and
early, around 3pm, before the big rush, which also gave Gwen time to do a few
highly needed loads of laundry as everybody was running out of clean
clothes. Cooked in the camp kitchen and
spent some time after on the computer, downloading pictures and updating the
blog, while Don chatted with our neighbour, a Dutch dad who was travelling with
his two teenage daughters.
